Children’s Book Week

Children’s Book Week seems like a good time for a first attempt at blogging. Teachers, students and parents are invited to use this blog to respond to my musings about libraries, books and reading.

Second graders were recently asked this question, “How are books like quilts?” Some responses included:

” They both make you feel good.”

“They both can tell a story.”

“They both have ideas stitched together.”

Thus we begin a year long journey of discovering books and quilts. Check this blog next week to talk about The Josefina Story Quilt, by Eleanor Coerr. Perhaps you can find it in your  public library if it is already checked out at school. We can also try to read it in library class. For now, think about the question …

How are books like quilts?

    Hello-
I really like quilts. I like to read a little. I like quilts because they tell life stories about wars and other things, and to see what happens in other peoples lives. I think a book is like a quilt because they tell stories about everything you could possibly think of. I like the idea of having a bookmark contest. It sounds great and I think I will do it.

I like The Stitch Story week. I like it because it gets us learning about stories and stories in life. I think quilts are like books because whenever you are in a story book, you are in a whole different world. When you can stitch something, then you can put into a story. If you went to the beach, then you can stitch a sun and waves. The Bookmark Contest is cool too, because people can be creative and show their thoughts on paper. Talk to you later!!!

    Peace,
    Hannah

Books are like quilts because when you are feeling sad or lonely you just cuddle up with it and it helps you recover.

I really like the idea of two book weeks even though we are not doing D.E.A.R. this time. I love to read and have just finished reading a book and all the pieces come together like a story of a quilt. It really made sense. I think that reading is a great way to learn about yourself other people and world events that made bg history. Books like quilts can teach you a story and they both really grab your attention.
    Rock on…..

I think books and quilts are similar because they express perspective. Writers use their characters to put forth views about the life; quilters use designs to give visual expression of what they see in the world. The piece, book or quilt, is a personal reflection of the person who crafted it.

    Hey!
I like Book Week because I love to read. There’s always a good book to read, no matter what mood you’re in. That’s how I think quilts are like books. They both can tell many different kinds of stories. I think it’s a great idea to have a bookmark contest. I might enter a bookmark for it.
    See ya!
